“Fashion has to reflect who you are, what you feel at the moment, and where you are going.” – Pharrell Williams
Fashion is such a powerful tool, it is your outward expression to the world of who you are. As put by Pharrell, it is also often a way we express the way we are feeling. When we’re feeling tired, stressed, down on ourselves, depressed, or (insert negative emotion), we may be inclined to dress in frumpy clothes that make us feel more comfortable. When you wake up feeling this way and open your closet to choose your clothes for the day, your favorite sweats look really good.
Like I said though, fashion is a powerful tool, and we can use that power to trick our brain and help pick up our spirits. When we dress to our negative mood, we are just reinforcing those feelings in our mind, we are keeping ourselves stuck. Instead of reaching for that sweatshirt that is 3 sizes too big, choose an outfit that makes you feel strong, beauitful, confident, and in control.
Chose a mantra for yourself that is the opposite of how you are feeling. For example, if you are feeling sad, tell yourself that you have all of the happiness in the world, you deserve peace, and you have peace inside of you. You may not feel it right away, but I bet you as your day goes on, you will start to feel the shift. You are taking control of your emotions, telling your brain that you are more than those negative emotions, that you can have a great day today!
In addition to dressing up your look, did you know that the color you chose can have a huge effect on your mood? If you’re feeling stressed, choose a cooler blue for a calming effect. If you have low energy, orange will help revitalize you. Turquoise can help you if you’re feeling down on yourself as it perpetuates unconditional love. There are plenty of resources to help you find a good color to be the positive yin to your negative yang, just do a google search for “color therapy”.
Don’t forget to at least throw on some mascara! You can repeat your mantra to yourself in the mirror while you apply your makeup. Be happy, be free!
